About PlainPetFood

Our Mission

PlainPetFood exists because pet food labels are confusing by design. Ingredient lists use technical terms that obscure what is actually in the bag. Marketing claims like "natural," "premium," and "holistic" have little regulatory meaning. And comparison shopping across brands is nearly impossible when every product presents information differently.

We believe pet owners deserve clear, searchable access to ingredient information without having to decode industry jargon or navigate marketing spin. PlainPetFood organizes pet food data into a format that makes it easy to understand what is in your pet's food, compare products, and make informed decisions based on actual ingredients rather than brand marketing.

Our approach is data-first and brand-neutral. We do not accept advertising from pet food companies, do not rank products based on affiliate revenue, and do not editorialize about which foods are "best." We present ingredient data and let pet owners draw their own conclusions.

Our Data Sources

PlainPetFood compiles ingredient and nutritional data from multiple publicly available sources:

  • Manufacturer-published ingredient lists: Ingredient data is sourced from product packaging and official manufacturer websites, which are required to comply with AAFCO labeling standards.
  • AAFCO standards: The Association of American Feed Control Officials defines ingredient names, guaranteed analysis requirements, and nutritional adequacy standards that govern pet food labeling in the United States.
  • FDA pet food regulations: The FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine oversees pet food safety, labeling compliance, and recall actions. We reference FDA guidance for ingredient classification and safety information.

How We Process the Data

We collect ingredient lists from product labels and manufacturer sources, then process them through our data pipeline:

  • Ingredient normalization: We standardize ingredient names across brands so that the same ingredient can be compared regardless of how different manufacturers label it.
  • Category classification: Products are organized by pet type (dog/cat), food type (dry/wet/raw), and dietary category for easy filtering and comparison.
  • Nutritional analysis: Where guaranteed analysis data is available, we extract protein, fat, fiber, and moisture content for cross-product comparison.

Data Currency

Pet food formulations can change without notice. Manufacturers may reformulate products, adjust ingredient sources, or update packaging without public announcement. Our database reflects the most recent ingredient data we have collected, but actual product contents may have changed since our last update.

We update our database regularly as new products launch and existing formulations change. However, pet owners should always check the actual product label for the most current ingredient information, especially if managing food allergies or sensitivities.

Editorial Independence

PlainPetFood operates a continuous editorial pipeline. Raw data from USDA, FDA, and related food-safety agencies is transformed into readable profiles through plain-language reformatting, then validated against the source before publication. The PlainPetFood editorial team, operating under Kiznis Studio, is responsible for editorial standards, methodology, and corrections.

We do not accept payment, sponsorship, or promoted placement from manufacturers, brands, retailers, or any food industry entity. Our only revenue source is contextual display advertising served by Google AdSense — advertisers do not influence which entities we cover or how we present data, and they do not receive preferential placement.

Limitations & Disclaimers

PlainPetFood is an informational resource, not veterinary advice:

  • Not veterinary guidance: We do not recommend specific foods or diets. Dietary decisions for pets — especially those with health conditions — should involve a veterinarian.
  • Ingredient data lag: Product formulations can change between our updates. Always verify current ingredients on the product packaging.
  • Brand neutrality: We do not rate or rank products. Our data helps you compare, but the right food for your pet depends on individual health needs, preferences, and veterinary guidance.
